House and gardens

RCH is an impressive historic building. It was sited next to the sea in 1897 for the sole purpose of helping people convalesce in the healthy sea air. It now embraces a modern, well equipped yet comfortable interior: the perfect place for respite or to rest and recover after surgery, illness or an accident.

Your home by the sea

At first glance what you see is an amazing majestic building surrounded by landscaped gardens which lead right down to the sea. RCH is not a modern purpose-built establishment or a converted house; RCH is a stunning Grade II listed building whose site was specifically chosen in 1897 for its recuperative fresh sea air. Today, it is still one of the most imposingly beautiful and appropriate sites for recovery and recuperation. Whilst the exterior of the building remains elegant and powerful, it belies the modern facilities and comfortable rooms within. It is hard to put into words what an amazing and unique place RCH is.

“The peace and quiet is very calming. You can watch the sun rise and set over the sea – it’s just idyllic. There is no better place to relax, re-energise and re-new so guests are ready and confident for life at home.”

Jackie Saunders, Senior Sister

Unique convalescent benefits

Great news for guests at RCH: environmental psychologists have confirmed that living close to the sea is linked to better general and mental health. They state that people who live close to water are happier, healthier and may benefit from “reduced stress, improved air quality and immune functioning – and [have] increased opportunities for social contact and physical activity.” Dr J Garrett.

“The Victorians knew what they were doing when they put us by the sea in 1897. We are convinced, as are our guests, that it’s part of the reason why guests who come to RCH make such good recoveries and leave feeling so renewed and refreshed.”

Julia Haynes, Manager of RCH

Inside comfort

RCH is a happy, relaxing and welcoming place to stay, dedicated to your care and recovery. There is a communal television room and an activity room where you can share experiences and immerse yourself in the activities on offer. Or you may prefer to sit in one of the stylish lounges to relax undisturbed with a book or make use of the free WiFi. The large conservatory overlooking the sea is the perfect place for mixing with other guests, entertaining visitors or simply sitting quietly enjoying the views. Whatever your preference or mood, there is plenty of space and comfort for everyone.

Modern equipment and medical facilities

As well as the comfortable public areas, there are private treatment rooms which house the latest medical facilities to ensure continuity of care after you are discharged from hospital. The nursing team are also able to provide equipment and items designed to help with a guest’s aftercare or continuing care when you get home. Every bedroom at RCH is en-suite and has a state-of-the-art nurse call system so help is at hand every moment of the day and night.

Outside gardens and beach

Outside, you can choose from exploring the landscaped gardens complete with summerhouse and terrace. Or you may prefer to take a stroll to the beach and enjoy the atmospheric sea sounds and taste the salty air. The nearby park is just a short walk away and is often visited by guests as they become more confident in their recovery. Visits to the local towns of Rustington and Worthing are arranged by RCH but are completely optional. They are a good way to merge back into home life with visits to shops, attractions and garden centres.

Shop on site

We have a hospitality shop which is set up in RCH twice a week where you can buy stationery, toiletries and other essential items. And, of course, if you need anything in particular, the staff will be more than happy to help.

Dining with friends, relatives and visitors

The dining room can be configured for individual preferences whether you would like to dine with other guests or at a table of your choice. When your friends and family come to visit – Covid restrictions permitting of course – they are welcome to join you for lunch, supper or afternoon tea for a nominal fee. We are happy to arrange the tables so there is plenty of room for them all.

Safe, happy and healthy

Our aim is to help you rest and recover so you can get back to enjoying life in your own home. We positively encourage you to discover the beach and the park, to stroll through the gardens and to visit the local towns. But you can be assured that we prioritise your safety and wellbeing at all times.
